The Hope of Easter: Living for a Higher Joy

The Easter season is a beautiful time in which we can move beyond the problems and struggles we face and focus on a higher hope and joy. In a world that often feels weighed down by division and strife, the Resurrection of Jesus offers us something solid to hold onto—a joy and peace that go beyond our circumstances or the circumstances of those around us.

The message of Easter isn’t just that Jesus rose from the dead—it’s that His rising changes everything. It transforms grief into comfort, fear into peace, and despair into hope. It shows us that even the darkest moments are not the end of the story. There is always the possibility of new life, fresh beginnings, and redemption.

This season invites us to lift our eyes from the immediate concerns of the world and focus on something higher—a love that is stronger than death.

Easter hope empowers us to live differently. It gives us courage to seek hope in difficult moments, strength to serve when we feel worn out, and joy to share with others even when life is heavy. It reminds us that we don’t walk alone—Christ goes before us, walks beside us, and makes all things new.

As we celebrate Easter, we’re invited to carry that hope into our homes, our friendships, our workplaces, and our daily routines. We can be people who speak life, offer encouragement, and live with hearts anchored in something eternal.

Let this Easter be more than a moment— embrace it as a season of love, joy, and hope that transcends the darkness of the world. As St. John Paul II once said, "Yes, Christ is truly risen, and we are witnesses of this. We proclaim this witness to the world, so that the joy which is ours will reach countless other hearts, kindling in them the light of the hope which does not disappoint."

The Art of the Easter Egg

Decorating Easter eggs is a childhood tradition many of us fondly remember—carefully dropping dye tablets into vinegar and water, gently lowering in hard-boiled eggs, and watching them transform into soft, cheerful shades of spring.

But beyond a simple pastime, egg decorating is also a cherished and intricate art form in parts of Eastern Europe. In Ukraine, this craft is known as pysanky, a name derived from the verb “to write.” Using a method of layering dyes and wax, artists create intricate, multi-colored designs that are rich in symbolism and history.

The process involves dipping raw eggs in vibrant dyes, with each color applied between layers of hot wax. The tool traditionally used is a kistka—a wooden stick fitted with a tiny metal funnel. Artists scrape beeswax into the funnel, heat it over a candle, and draw designs on the egg. Today, many artists use electric kistkas for more precise detailing. These eggs aren’t meant to be eaten, as the dyes aren't food-safe. Instead, they’re either kept raw or carefully hollowed out through a small pinhole for display.

The stunning eggs pictured above were created in this traditional pysanky style by Victoria Kocan, mother-in-law of Kristin Kocan, a member of the Home Unlimited Board.
