The Gift of Women in the Home and in the World
March 2026
Women’s History Month offers us a chance to reflect on the countless women whose lives were marked not only by achievement, but by love, generosity, and dedication to others. Their influence reminds us that meaningful change often begins in the quiet work of daily life—within families, communities, and homes.
Gianna Beretta Molla is a powerful example of a woman who integrated vocation, family, and service. A physician, wife, and mother, she saw her medical work as a mission and devoted herself especially to mothers, children, and the poor. She balanced professional life with forming a loving Christian family and ultimately gave her life following the birth of her fourth child after choosing treatment that preserved her baby.
Her life reminds us that holiness is found in faithfully living out our responsibilities with love, whether in professional work, family life, or service to those around us. Learn more about St. Gianna.
Margaret Gaffney Haughery—known as the “Mother of the Orphans”—began her life in poverty and hardship. After losing her husband and child to illness, Maragaret eventually became a successful businesswoman and used her resources to feed the hungry and build orphanages. She devoted her life to caring for widows and children in need, donating the majority of her earnings to charitable works.
Her story encourages us to see the resources entrusted to us as opportunities to serve generously within our own communities. Learn more about Margaret Gaffney Haughery.
Paquita Alvira, whose life is shared in Our Lives in His Hands, offers another beautiful example. She and her husband raised a large family and sought holiness through ordinary daily life, embracing marriage, work, and parenting as paths to sanctity. Their story highlights the importance of seeking holiness in everyday tasks and building a loving, faith-filled home.
These women lived in different places and times, yet each shows us something essential: loving others generously has lasting impact.
Women Making a Difference Today
Sometimes when we reflect on inspiring women from history, their strength and virtues can seem unattainable in our world today. The following women provide us with a modern example of living with purpose, conviction, and generosity.
Lila Rose is the founder and president of the pro-life organization Live Action. She began advocating for the dignity of human life as a teenager and continues her work today while raising a family of her own. Her example reminds us that motherhood and advocacy can coexist, and that conviction paired with love can shape culture.
Rachel Campos-Duffy has balanced a public career with raising a large family and frequently speaks about the importance of family life and motherhood. Her public witness emphasizes that family can remain the center even amid demanding professional roles.
Catherine Pakaluk is a Harvard-trained economist, professor, and mother of eight whose research focuses on family life, human flourishing, and the value of strong households. She lives with her husband and children while contributing to national conversations about culture and family. Her work highlights the profound role families play in shaping society and the importance of valuing motherhood alongside professional achievement.
These women—past and present—share a common thread. They recognize that loving service, generosity, and intentional family life are not small things. They are foundational.
Women’s History Month is a beautiful reminder that each of us participates in this legacy. Whether we are caring for children, welcoming others into our homes, serving our communities, or simply striving to bring order and joy to daily life, our work matters.
The quiet, faithful work of loving others continues to shape families, communities, and society itself.
