Making the Most of Family Time this Summer

It’s not about where you go- it’s about who you’re with.

As the pace of school slows down and summer days stretch before us, families find themselves with a rare gift: time together. Whether your children are in traditional school or homeschooled, summer offers a chance to pause, reconnect, and embrace the people who matter most.

But here’s the key: family time doesn’t have to be elaborate to be meaningful. You don’t need to plan the perfect trip or fill your calendar with back-to-back activities. What matters most is being present to each other, enjoying one another, and creating moments that build connection and belonging.

Think simple, personal, and intentional.

  • On your next road trip, try playing “20 Questions About Dad.” You’ll laugh, reminisce, and likely learn something new about the man who anchors the family.

  • Instead of rushing through meals, invite your kids to help cook. As you eat, try not to think about the cleanup or bedtime- instead, linger in the conversation.

  • Start a family book club or storytime, one chapter a night, all together on the couch.

  • Make a “summer interview” tradition: ask your kids about their hopes, their current favorites, their thoughts on the year so far, and write it down to look back on later.

  • Go for a walk and challenge everyone to notice something beautiful and share it.

These aren’t flashy moments, but they’re the ones that shape hearts and build family culture. The joy of family life is found in the individuals who make your home unique.

In honor of Father’s Day this past weekend, we'd also like to take moment to pause and reflect on the quiet strength and steady love our husbands offer. From leading bedtime prayers to fixing a broken bike, the everyday efforts of our husbands are powerful gifts to our families. Take time this month to notice, to thank him, to remind your children of the goodness of their father. These affirmations do not only strengthen your marriage, but contribute to the security of the whole family. When your children know that mom and dad are a loving team, the home is place where everyone can truly thrive.

Let this summer be a season of togetherness. You don’t need perfect plans- just the desire to draw closer to the people God has placed in your home.
